About LYP

LYP is a youth charity passionate about supporting local young people. We offer innovative youth services in Leatherhead, Bookham and across Mole Valley aiming to respond to local needs and help young people be safe, happy and make positive choices in their lives. We now have 10 staff working with over 600 young people on a regular basis throughout the year. Our two youth cafes, BFree in Leatherhead and BYouth in Bookham, run drop-in sessions for local young people after school and are attended by over 100 young people every week. We also run more targeted projects which help meet local needs and allow young people to become more confident, resilient and to learn new skills, including sports projects, schools work, one to one work, residential trips and overseas trips. LYP was established in 2005 and has a Christian ethos at the heart of its practice.


The position will be based at LYP, Leatherhead, with much of the work taking place in Leatherhead community, and other various locations.

Hours of work

The position requires flexible working over a 37-hour week with some evening and week-end work required.


The salary for the post will be £23,921 per annum. LYP also offers a pension scheme.


It is a Genuine Occupational Requirement that the post holder be a practicing Christian, due to the requirement to lead several Christian faith-based projects as part of the role.

Job Description

Purpose of Role

LYP is looking for an enthusiastic and passionate Youth Worker to join our growing team and help move the organisation forwards. This role will involve engaging vulnerable local young people a

ged 11-19. through innovative projects and activities, which build their confidence whilst responding to local needs. The core work will be leading group sessions and being a vital part of our BFree Youth Café team, in addition to supporting and leading other projects and events at LYP, including provision of Christian faith-based activities.

We are looking to appoint by January but can be flexible for the right applicant.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To lead targeted youth work provision and ensure that it is of the highest quality, including having the freedom to use your skills and passions to launch new services which directly meet the needs of local young people
  • To lead regular group sessions for young people aged 11-19 with a focus on addressing issues that are affecting them
  • To be an integral member of the BFree Youth Café staff team, with a particular focus on supporting teenagers who participate in the project by providing advice and guidance
  • To help give advice and guidance relating to careers and apprenticeships for young people aged 16-19 (specific training will be provided)
  • To build positive, supportive relationships with young people which help raise their confidence and growth as individuals
  • Co-produce youth work and projects with young people, allowing them to feel empowered and involved with planning activities
  • Ensure that all youth work is delivered in accordance with relevant policies and procedures
  • Develop relationships and work in partnership with other relevant organisations
  • Manage project budgets and other resources effectively
  • Opportunity to deliver one-to-one mentoring sessions within a school setting
  • Opportunity to lead Christian faith-based sessions such as Youth Alpha
  • Leading, developing and recruit volunteers

General Duties

  • Help lead annual residential camp during Easter holidays, with the option of also joining our bi-annual international trips to Romania
  • Promote the work of LYP
  • Attend events and meetings with local community partners
  • Be a lead for set projects (in Leatherhead and Bookham), managing all aspects
  • Support the other Youth Workers and youth provision
  • Contribute to effective administration by producing project plans, risk assessments and evaluations
  • To engage in regular training and development
  • To manage volunteers and interns
  • To help promote the Christian ethos and beliefs of LYP

Person specification

Education and Experience

  • Youth Work qualified and/or a relevant degree is desirable
  • Relevant Youth Work experience
  • Evidence of continuous training and personal development


  • Understanding of the issues that affect the lives of young people
  • Understanding of the barriers to participation in education, training and employment
  • Understanding of the Youth Work curriculum and related national developments and initiatives
  • Understanding of effective Youth Work approaches
