On Saturday we teamed up with Ashtead Youth Center for the next part of our Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. The day was all about learning map skills, first aid and camping. After an initial session on route planning the group of 14 young people and 4 youth workers split into two groups and went off in opposite directions. The young people were in charge of where we went, using their route plan and map and compass skills. At the start of the walk they had to work out how many steps in took them to do 100m, so they could gain an understanding of planning how much time each section would take. Also each group had to deal with a first aid emergency on route, which involved looking after the victim and finding their closest escape exit. At Lunchtime the two groups met up and participated in a challenge to put up and take down their tent. The day was a huge success and everyone is looking forward to our practice weekend expedition in two weeks time.
